Cultivated flax dates back thousands of years to the Fertile Crescent. It is grown in home gardens for its blue flowers that open on upright stems that blow wistfully in the wind. When flax sets seeds, they are prized for their supplemental nutritional value. The oil in the seeds is made to make linseed oil, an indispensable product in woodworking. The straight fibers of the stalk are used to make the material linen which is twice as durable as cotton and known for being cooler and more absorbent for warm and humid days.

Origination:
first domesticated in the Fertile Crescent. The evidence of flax cultivation dates as far back as 30,000 years ago in the present day republic of Georgia.

Recommended uses:
Seeds are used as a food crop that is high in omega 3 fatty acids, protein and fiber. The seeds are also used to make linseed oil for woodworking use. The stalks are used to make linen cloth. It is a lovely ornamental plant in any garden with tall upright blue flowering stems.

Hardiness: down to 28 degrees with mature plants surviving low 20’s in short periods. Tolerates heat as well.

Flax is a hardy plant that bears stems of blue flowers in 2 months. Flax is wonderful as a flowering annual, growing as a semi-hardy perennial in parts of the world. Flax is prized for the many versatile products made from its different parts.

Maturity: 90-100 days

Growing Instructions:

Direct sow flax seed in early spring ½ to 1” deep, up to 1 1/2” deep in coarse soils such as sandy loams. Sow in rows of 6” or less apart and 1” apart. Germination in 14-21 days, prefers rich soil kept moist not wet. Full sun location but rotate crop every year to reduce disease potential.
